Dental implants are an ideal solution for replacing missing or damaged teeth. They can help you achieve the fully restored smile that you are excited to share with the world. An important question that many of our patients ask about dental implants is what to expect during their recovery after receiving dental implants. Every patient’s recovery is unique and we will discuss the specific details of your expectations for recovery during your consultation with Dr. Michael Chung. However, here we will discuss the general aspects of recovery that you may experience.
If you are ready to discuss your dental implant surgery and recovery in detail, please call Softouch Dental Care today at 703-319-6990 to schedule your personal consultation.
General Recovery
Receiving dental implants requires surgery, and with every surgery there will be a period of recovery. You may experience some typical discomforts that are generally associated with dental surgery, such as:
- Swelling of the gums or face
- Bruising of the gums or facial skin
- Discomfort or aching at the implant site
- Minor bleeding
All of these symptoms should lessen in the days after surgery. If any of them worsen, please contact your oral surgeon. You may need prescription pain medications or antibiotics to alleviate these discomforts.
After surgery, you will be restricted in your diet. Soft foods will help prevent further discomfort as your gums heal. Sutures are generally made to dissolve on their own, but we will schedule a follow-up appointment to remove any stitches that should be removed and to check in on your general recovery.
We will give you instructions on cleaning and caring for the surgical site during the first few days and weeks of healing. And if you have any questions along the way, please feel free to contact our office. We are always happy to answer patient questions.
In many cases, Dr. Chung can place the implant and new tooth restoration in the same day. In these cases, you will only have one round of recovery. In cases where Dr. Chung needs to implant the tooth root and wait for osseointegration (the process where the jawbone grows around the new implant), you will have an initial recovery for osseointegration before your final tooth restoration. During your consultation with Dr. Chung, you can discuss what type of dental implants will be best to replace your missing or damaged teeth.
