What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of dental porcelain which are securely bonded to the front surface of your natural teeth. They are sometimes called dental veneers, or dental porcelain laminates.

These restorations are custom made in a lab, ensuring that they will blend in seamlessly with your smile. The color, size, and shape are all tailored to your unique needs. Modern porcelain veneers look very natural, as they reflect light in the same way that tooth enamel does.

“My teeth were generally healthy but I had veneers that I really disliked. Dr. Chung re-did my veneers and I love them! They are perfect. “

- Michael

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers can completely transform your smile in just a few office visits. They offer many benefits, which is why they are one of the most consistently popular cosmetic dentistry treatments in the United States year after year.

The benefits of veneers include that they:

  • Offer beautiful and natural results
  • Are staining resistant
  • Are durable and long-lasting
  • Can correct multiple concerns at once
  • Can improve your confidence in your smile
  • Are completely customizable
  • Can be completed in two office visits

Another benefit of porcelain veneers is their ability to help whiten your smile. When replacing an entire smile line, all of your veneers will be matched to a bright, natural color. The slightly translucent quality of each veneer allows light to pass through and reflect off your natural teeth. The non-porous surface of porcelain veneers helps protect against discoloration, maintaining the beauty of your smile for many years to come.

Veneers can also provide functional benefits. In many cases, cracked or weakened teeth will no longer need to be replaced after porcelain veneers are applied, since the veneer can act as a splint once a tooth has been stabilized. Despite how thin the porcelain is, once veneers are bonded to your teeth, they become very durable. With proper care, veneers can even help protect your teeth against decay.

Dental Problems Solved by Veneers

Due to their versatility, porcelain veneers can conceal a wide range of common aesthetic problems. These restorations are individually crafted to address your unique dental needs and cosmetic concerns. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, porcelain veneers can give you a smile that you will love to show off!

Porcelain veneers can improve the appearance of a variety of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Chips and surface cracks
  • Stubborn discoloration that does not respond to tooth whitening
  • Minor crookedness or misalignment
  • Mismatched tooth sizes
  • Uneven tooth shapes

Whatever combination of such problems your smile has, porcelain veneers can solve them in two visits. However, patients with severe bite conditions or alignment problems may benefit from another treatment, such as Invisalign. Dr. Chung will discuss your options in detail during your consultation.

Who is a candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

Throughout the years, your teeth really take a pounding with all the forces you exert day after day. If you suffer from pitted, slightly crooked, cracked, banded, or dingy-colored teeth that are immune to whitening, you may consider porcelain veneers.

While veneers may not be the right choice for everyone, they can be an excellent option for people who are good candidates.

Great candidates for porcelain veneers:

  • Have healthy teeth
  • Are not suffering from gum disease
  • Practice good oral hygiene
  • Want to improve the appearance of their smile
  • Have realistic expectations for the treatment

If the health of your teeth and gums is less than ideal, you may still be a candidate for veneers. However, Dr. Chung will need to treat any oral health issues before proceeding with the veneers process.

If you are interested in veneers, Dr. Chung will first examine your teeth closely, looking at their particular coloring, size, shape, and alignment. He will explain how veneers work and make sure that you know what to expect.

The Porcelain Veneer Process

After your initial evaluation with Dr. Chung, the application of your porcelain veneers will only take two visits.

The First Visit

Dr. Chung will lightly buff the surfaces of the teeth that are receiving the veneers, removing enamel to perhaps the thickness of eggshell to make space for the veneers. Many people need no anesthetic for this, as so little enamel is removed, but you can certainly have anesthetic if you prefer.

Dr. Chung will take an impression of the teeth using malleable impression putty. He will send this, along with supporting information, to our dental laboratory, and they will use it as a model for your veneers.

The lab will take one to two weeks to craft your customized porcelain veneers, and in that waiting period, you might be wearing temporary veneers. This would be decided ahead of time based on your tooth sensitivity, your preference, and Dr. Chung’s professional judgment.

The Second Visit

Your brand-new, custom-made porcelain veneers have arrived at our office! Dr. Chung will temporarily place them on your teeth, buffing down more enamel if needed and shaping the veneers to fit properly.

This is very precise work that shows the artistry of dentists as well as their technical skills. When everything looks good to you and Dr. Chung, then veneers will be bonded permanently using a curing light. Now you have a bright new smile!

What is the best way to care for your Porcelain Veneers?

Many people tend to assume that porcelain veneers require extra care. However, taking care of your veneers is as easy as caring for your natural teeth. An added benefit is that veneers resist the buildup of plaque, though poor oral hygiene will cause plaque and tartar to accumulate.

Make sure that you brush twice a day and floss once a day as you normally would. Remember to visit our office for routine dental cleanings to protect your oral health and help extend the life of your veneers.

Avoid habits that can damage natural teeth, such as:

  • Chewing on ice
  • Grinding and clenching your teeth
  • Using your teeth to open things
  • Smoking

Porcelain veneers can last for decades, but their longevity depends on how well you care for them. Porcelain is stain-resistant and durable, and we are confident that you will enjoy the benefits of your veneers for many years to come.

Porcelain Veneers vs. Braces

When it comes to achieving a straighter smile, you have several choices. For years, metal braces were the only option for correcting malocclusion. Metal braces are a conservative and effective method for correcting bite irregularities, but they can be obvious and awkward for adults.

With advancements in adult orthodontics, invisible braces such as Invisalign have gained popularity. With this option, your teeth can be straightened in a much less obtrusive manner. However, this orthodontic treatment still requires you to commit to follow-up visits and a lengthy straightening process.

Instead of resorting to orthodontics, porcelain veneers allow you to quickly and effectively achieve a straighter-looking smile. Because of this, veneers are sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics.

Instant orthodontics with porcelain veneers offers several advantages over braces. Some of the advantages of veneers include:

  • A faster solution to your dental issues
  • Do not require teeth to be straightened, which can minimize discomfort
  • Will not require a retainer after treatment
  • Can correct cosmetic problems along with improving your bite

Keep in mind that while porcelain veneers may give you the appearance of a straighter smile, they do not actually change the position of your teeth.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Chung will evaluate the quality of your smile. Based on your needs, he will suggest the procedure he thinks will provide you with the best results. With years of experience and a high rate of customer satisfaction, Dr. Chung is able to help all of our patients find the procedure most suited to their needs and provide results that will restore strength, function, and beauty to your smile.

HOW LONG WILL MY VENEERS LAST?

Porcelain veneers can last 10-15 years on average. The longevity depends on several factors, such as:

  • The quality of the material
  • The expertise of the dentist
  • The patient's oral hygiene practices

Dr. Chung is highly skilled at placing porcelain veneers and uses the latest tools and materials. His patients see great results from their treatments and find that their veneers are long-lasting.

CAN PORCELAIN VENEERS STAIN OVER TIME?

Dental Veneers Oakton VA

One of the advantages of porcelain veneers is their resistance to staining. Unlike natural teeth, porcelain veneers are less porous. This makes them more resistant to coffee, tea, wine, and other staining agents.

Remember that while the veneers themselves are resistant to stains, the natural teeth surrounding them can still stain. Because of this, you should do your best to maintain good oral hygiene and avoid excessively consuming staining substances. This will keep your smile looking bright.

WILL GETTING VENEERS MAKE MY TEETH MORE SENSITIVE?

It's common for patients to experience some sensitivity after getting veneers. This is usually temporary and should subside within a few days to a couple of weeks.

The process of applying veneers involves removing a thin layer of enamel. This can lead to temporary sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. If the problem persists or becomes severe, consult Dr. Chung to ensure no underlying issues are causing it.

CAN I STILL GET CAVITIES WITH PORCELAIN VENEERS?

Porcelain veneers themselves cannot get cavities. However, the teeth underneath them are still susceptible to decay. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps to prevent cavities and gum disease.

Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting Dr. Chung regularly will help protect your natural teeth and the longevity of your veneers. Additionally, using fluoride toothpaste can strengthen your enamel and reduce the risk of decay.

ARE THERE ANY FOODS OR DRINKS I SHOULD AVOID WITH VENEERS?

To maintain the appearance and longevity of your porcelain veneers, you may want to avoid (or at least limit your intake of) certain foods, including:

  • Nuts
  • Hard candies
  • Caramel
  • Chewing gum

These foods can damage or dislodge your veneers. If you choose to consume them, do so with care.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I VISIT THE DENTIST AFTER GETTING VENEERS?

After getting porcelain veneers, you must keep up with regular dental check-ups. For most people, this means going to the dentist once every six months.

These visits give Dr. Chung a chance to monitor your veneers and ensure your oral health remains optimal. Regular cleanings will also help keep your veneers and natural teeth in excellent condition. This prevents potential problems and extends the lifespan of your veneers.

CAN VENEERS BE USED TO FIX ONLY ONE OR TWO TEETH?

Yes, veneers can be used to fix only one or two teeth. These restorations are highly customizable and can address specific dental issues, such as chips, discoloration, or misalignment.

Applying veneers to one or two teeth can enhance your smile without the need for a full set. Dr. Chung will match the veneers to your surrounding teeth's color and shape to ensure a seamless appearance. This targeted approach allows for precise improvements while preserving your natural teeth.
