A Guide To Choosing A Good Toothbrush

How to Choose a Good Toothbrush

Most people should use a toothbrush about 1/2 inch wide and 1 inch tall, with a long handle to hold securely while brushing their teeth. Using a toothbrush that is too big or too small for you may be hard to reach your molars. Also, using a toothbrush too small may not be as effective as a professional toothbrush.

Bristles

Brush bristles come in three types: soft, medium, and hard. Plaque can easily be removed from your teeth using toothbrushes made from nylon bristles. Toothbrushes with very hard bristles can cause more harm than good. Using a toothbrush with stiff, long bristles can damage your gums and damage the enamel on your teeth.

If you want a soft toothbrush, look for one that has soft bristles and comes in three colors such as rounded or straight. Using rounded bristles is safer than sharp bristles, which can damage your gums and cause inflammation.

Electric vs. manual toothbrushes

Is an electric or manual toothbrush better? We have all heard the question. Both have advantages and disadvantages. People with limited manual dexterity may have difficulty brushing their teeth, but electric toothbrushes can remove plaque. Electric toothbrushes come with timers so you can brush your teeth for two minutes daily. Electric toothbrushes have sensors that detect when you brush too hard and damage your enamel.

Still unsure?

Consult your dentist. They can guide you in choosing the right toothbrush for you. Check out toothbrushes that have been certified by the American Dental Association (ADA). You can ask them about the type of toothbrush best for you. Speak to your dentist if you are still unsure which toothbrush is right for you.
